What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and why it matters now

For twenty years, SEO meant one thing: rank on Google's ten blue links. That game still matters — but a second one has quietly opened alongside it. A growing share of questions never reach a search results page at all. People ask an AI assistant and get a synthesized answer, often with a handful of cited sources.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making sure your brand is one of those cited sources.

SEO answers "where do I rank?" AEO answers "am I in the answer at all?"

Rank tracking tells you that you sit at position 4 for a keyword. It tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you when someone asks "what's the best tool for X?". Those are different questions, measured differently:

  • Visibility — across a set of prompts, how often does an AI engine mention your brand?
  • Share of voice — when it does mention brands, what slice is yours versus competitors?
  • Citations — which domains does the engine actually link to, and are you one of them?
If you only track Google rankings, you're blind to a channel that's already sending real traffic — and growing every month.

The mechanics: how AI engines pick what to cite

Most answer engines retrieve candidate sources, then summarize. Two things decide whether you're retrieved:

1. Can the AI crawler even read you?

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot fetch pages to build their indexes. If your robots.txt blocks them — or your content only renders client-side — you're invisible before the race starts. This is the single most common, and most fixable, AEO mistake.

2. Is your content structured to be quoted?

Engines favour clear, factual, well-structured passages: definitions, comparisons, step lists, and tables. The same things that make a page skimmable for humans make it quotable for a model.

How to start measuring it

You can't improve what you don't measure. A basic AEO loop looks like this: define the prompts your buyers actually ask, run them across the major engines on a schedule, record which brands and domains get cited, and track your share over time. That's exactly what Citenix automates — visibility and share of voice across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, plus an AI-crawler access check so you know GPTBot and friends can read you.

The brands that win the next decade of search will be found in both places: on the results page and in the answer.
